"A Clockwork Megas" is the 22nd episode of Megas XLR.

Plot summary[]

Coop attempts to upgrade Megas' sound system by connecting it to its quantum drive, but when he tests it, he ends up opening a wormhole that sucks in Megas and throws it into a distant planet. According to Kiva, they could be anywhere in the known, or unknown, universe. Suddenly, a giant robot approaches them and Coop gets ready for a fight, but he is suprised when the robot doesn't attack them and instead walks past Megas. Kiva tells a reluctant Coop to ask the robots about their locations and Coop finds a group of robots tending to a garden. He asks the robots how to return to Earth, but none of the robots seem to remember, until Coop reminds one of them that he is equipped with jets. As soon as the robot takes flight, however, he gets shot down by other robots, a squadron of guards.

Coop attempts to fight the guards, even when he gets no assistance from the other robots present at the garden, but Megas gets hit by an electrical discharge that shuts down all its systems. The guards take Megas to a facility run by a person named Klaar, who will decide what to do with Megas. Klaar is in the process of reprogramming another robot, designated as "32", who had been previously subjected to the reprogramming procedure but has always regained his lost memories.

As soon as 32 is reprogrammed, Klaar attempts to reprogram Megas, only to find that the repogramming process has no effect on Megas, for it is a manned robot equipped with no artificial intelligence. Upon realizing that Megas is piloted by an organic life form, Klaar has concluded that Megas and its pilot cannot be allowed to exist, lest they disrupt Klaar's work. He throws Megas and its crew into a conveyor line that leads into a huge metal-grinder.

Kiva barely manages to jump-start Megas and Coop destroys the metal-grinder, but Klaar orders the guards to stop Megas. Coop quickly defeats the guards, but Klaar deploys a huge satellite dish, which he uses to command the enslaved robots into attacking Megas. Kiva tells Coop that Klaar is using the satellite dish to control the robots, so Coop decides to destroy it without hurting the robots. Unfortunately, the robots use their own bodies as shields to protect the dish, so Coop rushes past them and damages the dish with Megas' energy sword.

The robots are freed from Klaar's control and 32 gives Coop coordinates so he can return to Earth. As Megas departs from the planet, Kiva is surprised that Coop was able to save a group of enslaved robots without having to destroy the planet, but Jamie notices the planet was actually a prison to the most violent robots in the universe and Klaar was actually trying to rehabilitate them. 32, now free from Klaar's control, decides to thank his liberator by paying a visit to Earth.

End credits[]

32 confronts Megas in the streets of Jersey City, but suddenly, he starts to happily jump across the city, ignoring Megas. It would appear that Klaar was able to repair his satellite dish and regain control of the escaped robots.

Trivia/References[]

  • The episode title refers to the film A Clockwork Orange which similarly explored criminals being forcibly reprogrammed to serve society.
  • The episodes musical score borrows key chords from the main theme of the original The Terminator.
  • Number 32 saying he is not a number, he is a robot is parody of the most famous line from the series The Prisoner; “I am not a number, I am a free man”.
